Xiaomi already preparing update to offer Virtual RAM

Today’s smartphones usually come with a lot of RAM, and it’s not uncommon to find 4 GB or even 6 GB of RAM on inexpensive devices. Some users may still experience multitasking and performance problems, but Xiaomi is reportedly working on a solution.

O Kacper Skrzypek, known for discovering information in the MIUI code, discovered references to a so-called memory extension feature on the Xiaomi interface, later revealing a screenshot of the feature as well. The references and screenshot suggest that MIUI is able to allocate a certain amount of storage to be used as a kind of virtual RAM, as you can see in the image below

This would not be the first time that we saw the ability to use storage as virtual RAM on a smartphone, as Vivo also offered an “extended RAM” feature in its X60 series earlier this year. For example, Vivo X60 Pro Plus allocates 3 GB of storage to be used as virtual RAM, effectively bringing the total to 15 GB of RAM. Vivo notes that the feature allows for a “smoother system user experience”, such as multitasking among more applications.

We also saw a similar feature in Windows a few years ago, called ReadyBoost. It allowed users to connect a flash drive, with the computer basically using USB drive storage as a kind of extended RAM. It is not faster than simply having more RAM, but it is definitely an improvement over using a hard drive.

There is no information on when the memory extension feature will arrive on MIUI or what devices will receive it. But, hopefully, Xiaomi does not restrict the function to new, next-generation devices, as older budget phones with less RAM would definitely benefit from a performance boost like this.

For example, a phone like the Redmi 8A, which has a basic model with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, would certainly see an improvement in multitasking with virtual RAM.
