Windows 11 App Store just got more useful

While there is a complete UI overhaul and some speed improvements, the main change is to allow more apps to enter the Store.

And in the past week alone, some popular apps have started appearing in the Microsoft Store for Windows 11, making it even more useful than before.

OBS Studio, Zoom, Canva, WinZip and Adobe Acrobat Reader made their way to the Microsoft Store last week, along with Microsoft Edge browser extensions.

These early additions, during the beta period of Windows 11, are a promising start.

And the Microsoft Store for Windows 11 and Windows 10 changed to include any traditional desktop apps.

Microsoft previously restricted developers to UWA apps before allowing some bundled desktop apps to use its Store for updates.

Any app can now be part of the Store, a move that aligns with the Windows Package Manager that Microsoft released last year.

And it became a better Windows package manager than the Windows Store in less than 24 hours, delivering apps like Zoom and WinRAR that were missing from the main store.

The package manager has grown steadily over the past year and now includes Discord, Google Chrome, Firefox and many other popular applications. There is even a third-party web interface that you can use with it.

The Microsoft Store is now essentially a front-end to the Windows Package Manager and the WinGet command used to install applications from the Microsoft Repository.

This means we may see more apps appearing in the App Store in the coming weeks. Mozilla, for example, has hinted that Firefox may be available soon.

We may see competing app stores in the Microsoft Store, such as Steam or Epic Games. Panos Panay said the company is open to having Steam or Epic Games on its store. It is likely to serve as a means of linking between applications and games available elsewhere.

And the new store allows apps to use their systems to update. In addition to allowing developers to keep 100 percent of the revenue from apps if they use alternative payment systems.
