For the first time, WhatsApp users will be able to upload photos and videos with a limited viewing time as part of an update designed to give them greater control over their privacy.

The WhatsApp application followed in Snapchat’s footsteps, giving users the option to send messages that are only sent once. The current update will be available to all users who have updated their version this week and is likely already on their device.

Although missing messages have long been associated with sharing risky content, WhatsApp suggested that the “Single View” feature is a useful way for users to share videos or images that they wouldn’t always be interested in keeping on their devices.

These can include photographs of clothing options taken in a locker room or snaps of sensitive information such as a router name and Wi-Fi password.

“As with all personal messages you send on WhatsApp, Single View images are protected by encryption, so Whatsapp won’t be able to see it,” the company wrote in a blog post. “They will also be clearly marked with a new ‘1-tap’ icon and “Once the images or videos have been viewed, the message will appear as ‘open’ to avoid any confusion about what was going on in the chat at the time.”

This type of single view images and/or videos are always interesting as they allow you to send content with limited viewing which is very good for, for example, sharing passwords or important data, however we already know that from the experience of Snapchat we also know that they can be used for uploading intimate photos or videos.

We just experimented, for example taking a screenshot when we had to view a Single View image and we managed to. Well, that’s why you really have to be careful with what you send, because the truth is that despite being a single view, the person receiving the message can save the image, just with a simple screenshot.

Therefore, always be careful with what you send and always bear in mind that there may be a way that you receive the image you can divulge for some reason.
