UPDATE Chrome NOW to fix an important security hole

Your online safety is critical to a positive user experience, and Google’s developers are constantly working to keep you safe while surfing the web. But even as they strive to keep applications secure from the start, inevitably some security flaws go unnoticed

The latest is a newly discovered Chrome vulnerability that is being actively exploited by hackers. Fortunately, Google has released an update for Chrome that fixes it along with other exploits, and since the security hole is very important and very used for hackers, you should update Chrome as soon as possible, whether on your computer or on Android.

Google recently released Chrome 91.0.4472.101 for Android desktops and devices, which fixes a number of security holes. One of them is CVE-2021-30544, a “zero day” exploit that is actively used and has been around since the beginning of the browser.

UPDATE Chrome NOW to fix an important security hole

The company isn’t disclosing how this flaw works “until most users update chrome,” but security researchers Rong Jian and Guang Gong report that it takes advantage of a usability flaw in the V8 Javascript engine – specifically BFCache, the Chrome’s way of caching webpages when you leave a website.

A remote attacker can compromise a system when a user visits a malicious website and then runs code to create an error.

How to update Chrome

Google reiterates that the Chrome exploit is being used a lot on the internet – and for that reason should update the browser as soon as possible. Your device should automatically find Chrome 91.0.4472.101, but if you get this notification, you can do it manually:

Chrome for desktop platforms

  • Click on the three-dot menu on the right side of the browser.
  • Mouse over “Help”.
  • Press “About Chrome.”
  • The search and subsequent update start automatically.

Chrome for Android

  • Open the Google Play Store.
  • Tap your profile picture in the search bar
  • Press “My Games & Apps”.
  • Ideally, I advise you to “Update everything”, which will update all the apps on your smartphone, but if you don’t want to do so, you can just choose Chrome and on the right side of the app click on “Update”.
