Twitter will add long-awaited pronouns to users’ profile pages

As part of a widespread design change, the social media platform, which has about 192 million active users per day, will feature a new ‘About’ tab in accounts.

Along with options to add your date of birth, title, current location and interests, there will be a section dedicated to listing your pronouns.

The ‘About’ tab will be to the left of the existing ‘Tweets’, ‘Tweets and Responses’, ‘Media’ and ‘Like’. Twitter did not provide a timeline for the scheduled update, but said it would be “soon”.

“The profile has not been updated significantly since 2014, which is a little mind-boggling considering how much Twitter and the world have changed since then,” said Andrea Conway, chief designer of the Twitter identity and profiles team, in a demonstration.

“Today, we don’t offer people many ways to express themselves, and in turn, we limit the number of signals available to understand the quality of that account and help people determine who and what to trust on Twitter.

“Furthermore, from a design point of view, we are dealing with a serious lack of space in the profile and we really want to change that.”

Other changes

Along with the ‘About’ tab, the company is also taking steps to reopen its public form to request verification, also known as a blue tick, according to a blog post on the Twitter website published on Thursday (May 20).

While it is not yet known how Twitter will launch the new pronoun support, Instagram may have provided a plan. The social network launched a section of pronouns in people’s biography last week.

Selected users can add up to four pronouns from a pre-selected list, which includes him, her, them and more, by clicking on the ‘Edit Profile’ button.

For those whose pronouns are not on the pre-written list, Instagram said people can fill out a form so they can be added or tapped into your bio for now.
