The Hollywood star made a trip to Silverstone for a duel with Mark Webber and David Coulthard, and in a video, Tom Cruise challenges the former F1 drivers to a duel as Top Gun, and with the soundtrack “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins that plays in the background. To clarify, Tom Cruise calls Channel 4 F1 presenter Steve Jones “Iceman” – an homage to Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer in the 1986 film Blockbuster.
Channel 4 made an impressive effort for this promotional video in preparation for this year’s British GP, and this clip tries to calm the wait a bit until the release of Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled for November 19th.
The fake machine-gun sounds made after a gear change are hilarious, as is the “missile lock” noise made by the front parking sensors. After playing around in Silverstone with Porsche’s naturally aspirated, track-focused machine, the team starts singing Johnny Rivers “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” as yet another Top Gun allusion.
Formula 1 fans have probably noticed that Hollywood star Tom Cruise took part in last weekend’s race at Silverstone. The 59-year-old was overjoyed when Lewis Hamilton managed to take the win by overtaking Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc on the penultimate lap of the British F1 Grand Prix. Turns out he flew to the UK not only for the race, but also to shoot a promotional video for Channel 4.
The only way this video is going to get any better is by featuring an exciting car, and the Porsche 911 GT3 certainly fits here. Add to the mix the legendary British racetrack and we have all the ingredients for an exciting video, filled with Top Gun references like “I am dangerous,” “there are no points for second place,” and the article’s author’s favorite “I feel the need for speed.”
