Today is the day: We lost one of the best features in Google Photos

Previously announced in November 2020, all photos and videos uploaded to Google Photos by users after today, June 1, 2021 will count against the user’s 15GB of Google Account storage.

If you are one of the users who uses Google Photos to automatically host your photos on your smartphone, whether it’s Android or iPhone, you have to pay attention so that you don’t reach the limit, because from then on, you’ll have to pay for continue to enjoy Google Photos.

Fortunately, photos already uploaded to Google Photos don’t count towards your storage limits. Only images uploaded starting today will count towards the 15GB limit that comes with each Google Account or additional storage purchased through Google One.

The company points out that Google Account storage is shared between Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. Practically, this means that the newly updated photos will compete for space with email attachments and any documents stored in Google Drive, so, contrary to what Google often suggests, you will have to pay attention if you are an avid user of Google services.

There is, however, an exception to the rule. Google Pixel users are the only ones who don’t have to worry about change. All high quality videos and photos uploaded from a Google Pixel smartphone will still not use the 15GB included in the Google account, which for some users may be an important factor in switching to a smartphone manufactured by Google, for example O Google Pixel 3a, for €341, O Google Pixel 4A for €353 or the top of the range Google Pixel 5 for €670.

Google says that about 80 percent of Fotos users won’t reach the 15GB limit for about three years after the new policy goes into effect. After June 1, 2021, however, you’ll have to consider how best to back up your photos and videos.

Google suggests that users who need more space can consider purchasing extra storage through Google One, where plans start at €1.99 a month for 100 gigabytes of storage.
