The US Army was scolded by Twitch for running fake giveaways on its streaming channel. After criticism for banning viewers who raise the war crimes story from service, Twitch has now forced the US Army Esports Team to stop a thin-veil recruitment trick disguised as free distribution of controllers.

This week, the The Nation reported an aspect of his recruitment campaign that was a little less, well, subtle. The Army was reportedly conducting freebies on its chat channel, offering viewers the chance to grab an Xbox Elite Series 2 gamepad.

When hopeful viewers clicked on the link, however, they were greeted by a “sparsely populated” page that made little or no mention of this award.

Instead, they were asked to “register to win” with a form that, according to the small print, allowed an Army recruiter to contact them later.

A Twitch spokesman said the army was instructed to stop this practice immediately.

“According to our Terms of Service, promotions on Twitch must comply with all applicable laws,” the spokesman told Kotaku, by email. “This promotion did not comply with our Terms and we require them to remove it.”

It is not the first time that the US Army’s broadcasting practices have been criticized. Shortly after the launch of the channel, they aggressively banned viewers who raised the US Armed Forces’ history of war crimes … An act that ACLU lawyers later told the Vice President would violate his first amendment rights.

“Pointing out government war crimes is not harassment, the truth is telling power,” noted the ACLU in Twitter . “Prohibiting users who ask important questions is not ‘flexible’, it is unconstitutional.”
