The Trump administration blacks out Xiaomi

The Trump administration decided to put the Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi, The world’s number three phone manufacturer, on the blacklist.

The US Department of Defense is now designating Xiaomi as a Chinese Communist military company, which means that it is now subject to Trump’s executive order that prohibits the United States from investing in such companies.

The executive order may force US companies and other American investors to divest investments within Xiaomi by November 11, 2021.

Xiaomi confirmed in a statement that it is operating in accordance with the laws and regulations relevant to the countries in which it conducts its business.

The spokesperson claims that Xiaomi is not owned, controlled or affiliated with the Chinese military, nor is it a Chinese Communist military company designated under the NDAA.

Xiaomi says: It is now reviewing the possible consequences of the US Department of Defense step before taking any action.

While the Biden administration may revoke the executive order before then, it is interesting to see electronics companies such as Xiaomi, blacklisted.
