The 4 students who will represent Portugal in the 2021 International Computing Olympiads are already known

After the extraordinary results of the Portuguese delegation in the last editions of the International Informatics Olympiads (IOI), in which Portugal brought two silver medals and one bronze medal, the four students who will participate in this year’s edition, which takes place this month.

The four students are:

  • Tiago Marques – 11th year at Colégio Internato Claret (VN Gaia)
  • Pedro Costa – 12th year of the Ponte de Lima School Group (Ponte de Lima)
  • António Neves – 12th year of the Salesianos in Lisbon (Lisbon)
  • Tomás Faria – 8th year at Colégio Moderno (Lisbon)

The selection of these students was made through their participation in the 33rd edition of the National Informatics Olympiads (ONI), a national competition, promoted and organized by APDSI – Association for the Promotion and Development of the Information Society, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, aimed at young people attending secondary or basic education throughout the national territory.

It will be the first year for everyone to participate in IOI. The student Tiago Marques is the element that, at this moment, is the best qualified, having won the National Final, the Selection Test and conquered a gold medal at the CIIC, and he will still be able to participate in 2022 (since he is still in the 11th year ). On the other hand, student Tomás Faria becomes the youngest Portuguese student ever at IOI, as he is still in the 8th year, opening up excellent prospects for the future. Until now, only 9th grade students have gone to IOI: the Team Leader himself, Pedro Ribeiro, Professor at the Department of Science and Computers of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (DCC-FCUP) and organizer of the Informatics Olympics in Portugal in 1995 and former student Afonso Santos in 2011.

The top seven classified at the National Informatics Olympiads were also invited to represent Portugal in the Ibero-American Contest of Informatics and Computing (CIIC). This competition, which also serves as preparation for the International Olympics, has an international character and, in the 2021 edition that took place on May 23, the best students from 14 different countries participated: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Peru, Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

Student Tiago Marques got a 3rd place out of a total of 125 participants, which guaranteed him a gold medal. Portugal also got two honorable mentions: Pedro Costa and Tomás Faria.

The International Computer Olympics will take place between June 19 and 28, 2021. The Portuguese delegation has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Ciência Viva, everis Portugal and the Foundation for Science and Technology.
