TCL 20 Pro 5G Review: Review

The predecessor of the TCL 20 Pro – the TCL 10 Pro – impressed us with its attractive price, its incredible OLED screen and decent battery life, but it lacked some features such as 5G, wireless charging and battery resistance. Water.

This time we’ve got it: The TCL 20 Pro includes 5G support and wireless charging, plus an improved chipset, updated display technology, a new camera system, more storage and a sleek new design. Unfortunately, it has no water protection.

One of the most beautiful smartphones released this year, the TCL 20 Pro 5G has a glossy finish on the glass backing. Comes in two colors: blue or gray.

A long, thin device is the best way to describe the shape of the TCL 20 Pro 5G. Measuring 164.2 x 73 x 8.77 mm and weighing 190g, the user will have no problem using it with just one hand. The glossy design makes it a little difficult to hold as it’s slippery, but the packaging comes with a protective cover to solve that problem.

Unlike other smartphones, the camera module is completely integrated into the back of the device. With the lenses placed in line on the left side, it’s nice to see something like that a little different.

The 6.67-inch AMOLED screen is almost frameless – it has a screen-to-body ratio of 93% – with a small hole for a camera lens in the center at the top. The curved edges make the display of this smartphone really clean, smart and more premium than it actually is. With an FHD resolution + 1080 x 2400 pixels, 394ppi and 16.7M colors, the screen is fantastic.

The new NXTVISION 2.0 fluid display technology is built into the device and uses the visual enhancement of artificial intelligence to recognize the type of content on the display and automatically adjust the colours, contrast and sharpness. When watching videos, in particular, you can easily notice the difference. Offers a much stronger contrast between light and dark areas, while colors are enhanced and finer details appear more accurate. Also, it supports HDR10 for TV and movie streaming. It has a 60 Hz refresh rate.

To unlock the smartphone, there is a fingerprint sensor on the display that is well aligned with where the user’s thumb fits naturally into the frame. To the right of it are the volume and on/off buttons, with USB-C charging on the bottom and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G comes equipped with a 48MP Sony OIS camera, with a 16MP ultra wide angle lens, a 5MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. At the front, we have a 32 MP selfie camera. The entire system can record videos in resolutions up to 4K at 30fps.

The photos come out pretty sharp, though they’re not out of this world. You have to take them out with the right lighting. They have good depth when it comes to landscapes, especially urban ones. The selfie camera is worth noting, especially with the beauty mode activated, as the photos come out with a flattering and very sharp look.

Using the ‘Night’ mode, the photos come out very well lit and detailed. It’s so good that it’s much better than the same mode on other more expensive smartphones. The ‘Macro’ mode is also excellent: it can show the finest details of any object.

The TCL 20 Pro is equipped with the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chip, the Adreno 619 GPU, 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. That’s enough memory for medium usage, and there’s a MicroSD card slot to expand it even further if needed.

Naturally, the 750G chip has 5G support, which is fantastic for anyone living somewhere where they can make use of this feature. However, the TCL 20 Pro 5G only has Wi-Fi 5, which is worth keeping in mind for those who have Wi-Fi 6 at home, as they won’t be able to fully enjoy this device.

Running Android 11 with the TCL user interface, the TCL 20 Pro 5G comes with several apps pre-installed, some of which are unnecessary and can be deleted.

The TCL 20 Pro 5G smartphone is equipped with a large 4,500mAh battery. It can handle about two days of average use, even occasionally watching videos of a few hours, which is great. In the box comes an 18W charger, and TCL claims it takes just two hours to recharge the battery to 100%. It supports 15W wireless charging, which is a wonderful bonus.

For those who especially enjoy watching videos, this smartphone uses only 10% of the battery in a 2 hour video, even if it is viewed at maximum brightness.

Verdict: TCL 20 Pro 5G

The TCL 20 Pro 5G costs less than €600, and you can find it on sale for €550 in some stores. This smartphone is suitable for those looking for a device of this kind that is elegant, has an impressive screen for streaming video and a long battery life.

Although the camera is good, it is not the most suitable for those who like to take great pictures to post on social networks. For these cases, there are better options out there. We also don’t recommend this smartphone to anyone who likes games on mobile devices, wants faster performance and a higher refresh rate.

Taking all the features into consideration, despite having some drawbacks, the TCL 20 Pro 5G is still a good smartphone. Despite not having significant standout features, it is still a very capable and efficient smartphone. The large curved screen is its most special feature, but it’s the reasonable price that really makes it a very convincing purchase option.
