SpaceX has partnered with Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC), a Canadian startup that provides technology services, and together they will provide advertising space, which can be paid for in cryptocurrencies.
Samuel Reid, CEO and co-founder of GEC, announced that, together with Elon Musk, they will launch a satellite, called CubeSat. One side of the satellite will have a screen where advertisements, logos and other promotional content will appear.
Geometric Energy Corporation plans to launch the CubeSat on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which will launch it before the latter reaches the moon. The satellite will integrate a screen and a selfie stick, so you can see ads, logos, and other promotional content.
Through selfie stick it will be possible to capture images, which will be transmitted, in real time, on Youtube or Twitch. Thus, anyone will be able to watch this content, from any device with internet capability.
To buy ad space, you need to buy tokens. Payment will be made via cryptocurrencies such as ethereum. It is hoped that, in the future, it will also be possible to pay through dogecoin.
To Business Insider, Samuel Reid said: “I’m trying to create something that can democratize the access to Space and allow a decentralized participation”. “Fortunately, people don’t waste money on something inappropriate, insulting or offensive,” he added.
Advertising space is available to anyone interested as well as to companies or artists. “There may be companies that want to showcase their logo, or it may be more personal and artistic content,” said those responsible for Geometric Energy Corporation.
Reid told Business Insider he couldn’t reveal, for now, how much each CubeSat token would cost. But given the amount of time, effort and money spent, it’s likely that ad space won’t be cheap.
According to Reid, the launch of CubeSat is scheduled for early 2022.
