Sony updates Playstation 5 and solves serious noise problem

Users have seen another change since the last PS5 update that apparently makes the console quieter whenever a disc is inserted. Previously, the PS5 had a bad habit of making noise on the disc drive at high speed every now and then if you had a disc on the console’s Blu-Ray 4K drive.

In contrast to the console, the PS5’s disk drive was noticeably noisy during those times and could be distracting when you were playing or watching media.

Of course, this problem does not affect those who own the PS5 Digital Edition console, as it does not include a disk drive, but it appears that the April update of the PS5 reduced the noise of the PS5 disk drive.

The console still spins the disc, but it’s not as loud as it used to be. It is not clear whether Sony has slowed the drive or whether it is simply a placebo effect, but several users, along with the PushSquare, reported that the noise is actually quieter.

The PS5 is, luckily, much quieter than the PS4 and PS4 Pro, which used to be criticized for being too noisy when playing games with intense graphics. Anything that helps keep the console quiet is a win in our books, so we hope Sony can reach a stage where the disc only needs to be read when absolutely necessary.

Other updates

Even though the new PS5 update helped to ease the burden of the PS5’s 667 GB internal SSD – you can now store PS5 games on an external hard drive, but can’t play them – Sony hasn’t yet unlocked the M drive .2 on the console.

Sony has promised that it will share more information in due course, although we have our concerns about Sony’s internal storage solution.

Unlike the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, which include a storage expansion slot at the rear, the PS5 will require users to remove the system’s faceplates and screw an M.2 SSD drive. However, Sony has not revealed which drives will work, but they can be worryingly expensive.

Those using a 1440p monitor may also be wondering when Sony will add support for the PS5 1440p. Currently, if you connect a PS5 to a 1440p screen, the maximum available resolution is 1080p. In comparison, the two new Xbox consoles allow users to produce the 1440p.

There is work to be done, then, but the latest PS5 update is promising and has also added some quality of life updates. We hope it won’t take another five months for the next update to arrive.
