The Nikkei newspaper reported. Nikkei On Friday, Sony Corporation is in final talks with US telecom company AT&T to buy American animation broadcasting service (Crunchyroll) in a deal worth more than 100 billion yen ($ 957 million).
Nikki said the acquisition would give Sony access to the 70 million (Crunchyroll) members worldwide, allowing the Japanese entertainment and electronics group to better compete with Netflix and other global competitors.
Sony – which recently obtained exclusive rights to negotiate a (Crunchyroll) – hopes to leverage the new channel to distribute its entertainment content, including movies and music.
Sony bought Funimation Productions – an animation distribution company with 1 million paid subscribers – for $ 143 million in 2017.
Sony is boosting its gaming and entertainment activities as part of CEO Kenichiro Yoshida’s strategy to increase recurring revenue streams that mitigate the impact of volatile device sales cycles.
Sony raised its annual earnings forecast this week, as its gaming activity continued to attract “crossed” demand and the Japanese animated movie Demon Slayer – jointly distributed by Sony’s music unit – made a strong start in Japan.
In another news related to Sony, the company announced, through a new blog, more details about the PlayStation Plus range, which is a new coordinated series of (PlayStation 4) PS4 games that will be available for digital download via the (PlayStation 5) PS5 platform.
It is supposed to launch the service with the new gaming platform in the United States on November 12, and PlayStation Plus provides (PlayStation 5) owners more than ten classic (PlayStation 4) games.
The games will be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers at no additional cost, and will remain available as long as the subscription is active.
