Announced Sony has partnered with the Discord chat service and will integrate the service into the PlayStation Network early next year.
And PlayStation users could soon have another way to communicate with each other.
Sony’s CEO and Director of Interactive Entertainment said: “At PlayStation, we are constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with each other, make new friends and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories.
He added: Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences together across the platform and mobile devices starting early next year, allowing friends, groups and communities to enjoy and communicate more easily while playing games together.
Details on what this entail remain scant, and a Sony announcement only says: The two companies are working hard to connect Discord to your social and gaming experience via PlayStation Network.
And what is coming has not been announced, and does that mean full access to the Discord app on the PlayStation platforms, or a more limited integration, such as linking PSN and Discord accounts to chat more easily with friends outside of the platform.
As part of the new partnership, Sony is also investing an unspecified amount of money in Discord as part of the Series H investment round as a minority investor.
Discord is one of the largest online communities, especially for gaming enthusiasts, with more than 140 million active users as of December 2020.
The company was reportedly in talks to acquire it by Microsoft in a $ 10 billion deal earlier this year, but these talks appear to have ended, and Discord decided to remain an independent company instead.
The chat service has reportedly been in discussions with other companies, such as Amazon and Epic Games, but it appears to have ended all acquisition talks, at least for now.
Discord plans to focus on expanding the business as an independent company, building the chat platform, and making money from its rapidly growing user base during the pandemic, and it is also considering an initial public offering, but it is not imminent.
In the coming months, more information should emerge about how Sony is integrating Discord into its PlayStation products.
