Sony has announced a new partnership with Discord that will bring the communication service resources to PlayStation Network. Integration is expected to be available early next year. The news comes after Microsoft failed to close a deal to acquire Discord.

In a Sony blog post, Jim Ryan, president and CEO of SIE, said the teams are already working hard to connect Discord with PSN, which will be an excellent addition for Playstation users, since Discord is one of the most popular media in the gaming world.

“Our goal is to bring Discord and PlayStation experiences closer to the console and smartphone from the beginning of next year, allowing friends, groups and communities to have more fun and communicate while playing together,” said Ryan.

To make the integration happen, Ryan said that SIE made a minority investment as part of a new investment round recently launched by Discord.

Since the launch of Discord in 2015, the service has become a popular place for communities to discuss their love of games, movies, technology and everything in between. It has become the preferred way for people on the PC to chat with voice during games and a place for creators to start channels for their fans. Discord recently launched its own Clubhouse-like feature called Stage Channels.

While Discord features are expected to be integrated into PlayStation, the details are still unclear as to what will happen. Will there be a dedicated PlayStation app? Practically right with this partnership and I’m sure many PlayStation fans will appreciate it.

Although the PlayStation already has a built-in voice chat feature, there is no easy way to talk to people on the PC, unless you use the in-game chat, which is not yet very functional. Adding Discord to PlayStation can fix that, while adding the service’s many social features to PSN. Discord is currently available on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, iPadOS, Linux and web browsers.

Discord had around 140 million active users in December 2020, while there are millions of PlayStation users worldwide, which also promises to be beneficial for the increase in Discord users. With an integrated experience that should not be launched before the start of next year, there is still a lot of time to work out the details. In principle, we should know what the fruit of this partnership will be soon.
