Sharp Aquos R6: Leica ends exclusive partnership with Huawei and bets on Sharp

We don’t hear much about Sharp’s smartphones today, mainly because they are only available in Japan and some other selected regions, although for most followers of the area the brand is not entirely unknown.

However, the company has just unveiled a new model, the Aquos R6, which is loaded with interesting technology, as it reports Engadget. It is true that in terms of specifications they are very similar to the other high-end ones, but it is in the camera that it captured our attention, since it has the Leica brand and the largest sensor so far present in a smartphone, in a step for some time talked about that Leica would have undermined the exclusive partnership with Huawei, which greatly marked the success of the Chinese brand, but in the sale of smartphones it has already had better days.

Sharp collaborated with Leica to create a 20-megapixel camera with a 1-inch sensor, one of the largest available on any smartphone. It worked with Leica on the entire camera system, including the sensor (probably built by Sony), 19mm f / 1.9 wide angle lens (35mm equivalent) and image quality features. The 7-element lens design also won Leica’s “Summicron” brand, which supposedly allows you to shoot with less distortion. However, the Aquos R6 has only a single rear camera, so the zoom (from wide angle to telephoto) is done digitally, not optically, in an almost unique option nowadays that the “fashion” has been to place many rear sensors.

Sharp’s collaboration with Leica is quite interesting, as there were many rumors emerging that Leica was ending its relationship with Huawei, although both companies denied that. Given the new collaboration from Sharp, however, Leica is no longer exclusive to Huawei, at least and that must be what is happening, the partnership between Leica stopped working exclusively with Huawei, which taking into account the excellent photographic quality that has always guided Huawei smartphones, is excellent news for the market and for other brands.

In recent days there have even been rumors that pointed to Xiaomi as one of the partnerships, however, for now, still nothing is official. Now let’s get to the specifications of the smartphone.

The Aquos R6 has a screen that matches the camera. The 6.6 inch 2.730 x 1.260 HDR screen offers up to 2,000 nits of brightness, also the highest available on a smartphone. To achieve that figure, Sharp said it developed the OLED display using its IGZO technology, although it is unclear exactly how it works. To avoid fast battery consumption on such a bright screen, Sharp reportedly developed a system to reduce the refresh rate to 1 Hz when a still image is being used.

Another interesting feature for security-conscious people is the double fingerprint system. The Aquos R6 is apparently one of the first smartphones to use Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Max fingerprint authentication system, first announced in 2019 and which had not yet reached the market. The significantly larger area makes it easier to identify the fingerprint, while allowing users to log in with two fingerprints simultaneously for extra security.

Other specifications include the high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 12 GB of RAM, 128 GB of expandable storage, Android 11, IPX8 and a 5,000 mAh battery to support that excellent display.

As for the price, Sharp did not disclose the final price of this equipment or when it will be available on the market, however, considering the recent past of the brand, do not have much hope of seeing it in your country.
