Samsung is still the absolute best when it comes to Android updates nowadays, and it’s also very focused on long-term support.
However, there are limits to everything, as Samsung announced that it has ended support for the Android update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 +.
And in page The update for the South Korean company, which details the models that are eligible for updates, has removed the Galaxy S8 series.
Samsung was providing the update for the Galaxy S8 devices on a semi-annual basis, so this was not a huge loss for users, but it is still a sign of the end of the life of this device.
It’s been four years since the series first appeared, and the last update to which the Galaxy S8 series was eligible was the April 2021 security patch.
Notably, some models from the Galaxy S8 series are still on the schedule, as the Galaxy S8 Lite is still getting semi-annual updates, while the Galaxy S8 Active gets quarterly updates.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + phones were launched in April of 2017, while the Galaxy S8 Active and Galaxy S8 Lite were released months later.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + began the era of bezel-less smartphones by significantly reducing the top and side edges compared to other phones of the time.
For comparison, the Galaxy S8 was released just six months after the original Google Pixel, which had thick top and bottom bezels.
These phones were also the first devices from Samsung outside the Galaxy Nexus to support screen navigation, as previous devices included physical navigation buttons.
Over the next two generations, Samsung has worked to increase thinness and improve design features, which first appeared with the Galaxy S8, via its other flagship phones.
At this point, the oldest Samsung phones leading to monthly security updates are still the Galaxy S10, along with the presence of the Galaxy S9 phones in the quarterly security update schedule, and it is likely that they will receive updates for another year before the tech giant stops supporting them as well.
