Review of the Oppo Reno 4 Pro 5G: Review

Having Oppo launched three Reno 4 models of 5G smartphones, the most sophisticated of them is the Reno 4 Pro. With a very thin glass, the smartphone is a great bet for Oppo to stand out in the increasingly competitive market for these devices. A large screen with a high refresh rate, an elegant design and a reliable camera are other features of the Reno 4 Pro highlighted.

It is also one of the fastest charging smartphones in the world. Everything is fine until we read the specifications manual. The processor of the Reno 4 Pro is a medium sized chip. A stone in the shoe? No. But could it have more power? Definitely.

Design and display

The Oppo Reno 4 Pro is very beautiful. It combines a 6.5-inch tall screen, small bezels and a perforated selfie camera with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate.

Held together by a sandwiched metal frame in front and behind the glass, it is a classic and working combination. The new Reno 4 Pro is very thin, only 7.7 mm thick. However, it looks quite robust due to its curved and pure glass, which is cool to the touch.

At the back is a beautiful collection of camera lenses – or shall we say cameras. There are three individual chambers, each protruding a little, rising from the device. The smartphone comes in two colors – glossy black or matte blue; definitely, for those who don’t like fingerprint stains, the matte blue version is the best. The smartphone comes with a pre-installed screen protector that protects you on all sides – although it is not waterproof.

The large OLED screen is super bright with excellent viewing angles. With its 90 Hz refresh rate, the Oppo Color OS interface looks silky and, despite not having a 2K or 4K resolution, it is still sharp enough. There is also a fingerprint reader under the display which is useful – and works quickly.

Oppo loaded the Reno 4 Pro with many options for the display, from dark mode to eye comfort features, customizable refresh rates and a variety of color modes. Although the screen of the Reno 4 Pro does not compare to the Oppo Find X2 or Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it is still very good.

Cameras

The main camera of the Oppo Reno 4 Pro is clocked at 48 MP, with f / 1.7 lens and OIS. This combined with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera and a 13 MP 3x optical zoom snapper.

It features standard shooting modes – Auto, Pro, Night Mode and more, and thanks to intelligent electronic stabilization combined with OIS, it captures video steadily.

The details of the photos with this smartphone are great. Even indoors with average artificial light, keep your hand steady and the photos will look sharp. You will be able to pinch and cut them a little and they will still be good enough for you to put them on social networks.

The color balance in the three cameras is also great, unless lighting is an issue – a bright TV on the side or colored lamps, for example, ruin the photos. Despite this, saturation balances a realistic and vigorous look with subtlety, looking less energetic than Samsung smartphones, including the Galaxy S20, probably one of the main rivals of the Reno 5G.

As for the ultra-wide camera, it’s anything but a disappointment, thanks to a new Sony sensor at its heart. The photos look sharp enough, whether taken from near or far, thanks to the auto focus – absent in most ultra-wide lenses.

Another advantage: the phone’s night mode works on all three cameras. The 3x optical zoom is decent. Unlike the Pixel 5, however, the Reno 4 Pro cannot record 4K video at 60fps, limited to 30fps.

That said, the video looks incredibly good, with the integrated stabilization working just fine. The Reno 4 Pro handles low light better than most competitors (below 700 €) in video mode, and to get the best results, just lower the resolution to 1080p.

Software

Running Android 10 with Color OS 7, the Oppo interface went from complex and clumsy on the Reno 10 X Zoom to simplified and efficient.

Navigation is easy: we can choose between an offer of numerous applications or an iPhone-type UI with all the apps on the home screen. There is a notification bar at the top and a space for Google on the left.

Having covered the wide range of display modes previously, Oppo extends this customization to various UI elements, from gestures, home screen grid size, themes, icon styles and more.

Combined with the 90 Hz screen and the Oppo’s great optimization, as well as super responsive sliding and touching across the user interface, third party applications work extraordinarily.

Processor and battery

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, the 12 GB Reno 4 Pro’s RAM is a marvel. The same is true with 256 GB storage – lots of space, so the lack of expandable storage is irrelevant.

The 4000mAh battery is a decent size and lasts as long as we expected – one day comfortably, but no more, unless you don’t use your smartphone a lot.

The real highlight is its charging speed – up to 65W with SuperVOOC 2.0, it increases 60% in 15 minutes and 100% in 36 minutes.

Verdict: Oppo Reno 4 Pro

The price of the Reno 4 Pro smartphone is around 700 €. Given its quality without anything really out of this world, it shouldn’t be a huge sales success.

If you like games a lot, the Oppo Reno 4 Pro is not the smartphone for you. Its processing power is not very good for gaming. That said, if you are a more casual gamer or if you are not very gaming-oriented at all, then the Reno 4 Pro is an incredible option.

This smartphone has many features and points in its favor: a beautiful curved display, a premium design, a triple, ultra-wide and telephoto camera system that is really great, and also incredibly fast charging. As for this last point, there is no wireless charging – a negative point on a € 700 smartphone.
