The Devil May Cry 5 action-adventure title was initially released on March 8, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. Contrary to what was initially announced by Capcom that there would be no continuity in the development of the fifth edition of the series, the producer inserts a special edition of the game on the market for the new generation of consoles.
Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition proved to be a fantastic edition of the new game. Even with the ongoing production of Resident Evil 8 and, perhaps, the next Devil May Cry, Capcom wasted no time in adapting its series for the new generation of consoles – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X. This new version offers the possibility to play in 4K with ray-tracing or 120 frames-per-second.
This edition does not add much to what was seen in the previous game last generation, however, the now unlocked title was released on November 12, 2020 and features a fourth (new) character, Vergil – Dante’s twin brother. – which introduces a new class into the game. This new character is incredibly amazing in the way he plays in-game including new skills that make him truly unique – “concentration meter”, the ability to teleport and even impressive sword handling.
The game in the new generation offers a graphic quality and impressive textures, with or without ray-tracing, because with the latest updates, the game has substantially improved the lighting, compared to the previous generation. In addition, the new 3D audio on the new PS5 console works perfectly in this game and, when associated, with the greater density of enemies provided by the specifications of the new generation.
Facing enemies took on a new form, after all we are talking about Devil May Cry, but above all, a rethought game for hardware with greater potential (something that was already implied in the PC release). The high cadence of images per second helps in this new task, allowing to anticipate your enemy in a grand way (not limited to 30 or 60 fps). But of course, it depends on your taste, because if you prefer something in greater detail, you can give up 120 fps to enjoy more graphics and ray-tracing (but let me tell you that RT is just an extra than a necessity) .
The special edition of Devil May Cry 5 did not give Vergil a truly explicit role, since this character does not have a story of its own, but rather small parts in which it is possible to play with the character – and what character – it would have been interesting to see something more than what was shown during our experience.
But after all, what really comes up on the table in terms of new activities for this new version (of a new generation)? In addition to Vergil, Capcom chose to include a new level of difficulty – something common in this category of games and that several producers have bet – Legendary Dark Night that allows to gather an absurd amount of monsters that will not have hands to measure and perhaps this new character may be the solution to overcome obstacles.
There is not much to point out in terms of performance about the new PlayStation 5. The game is somewhat demanding, so with all the active effects, maximum quality and ray-tracing allow very accurate and almost flawless gameplay to 30 images per second natively, or alternatively, 4K at 60 fps in a dynamic aspect so when facing more complex scenarios or with an abundance of actions and effects do not have a disappointment. Honestly, I think Capcom has done a good job in unlocking performance for the new generation.
Within the panoply of characters, the one that brought the most complexity to this new edition of the game is certainly Dante, which includes skills, mechanics and weapons that can be changed in combat. This allows you to deal with each enemy in front of you in a very interesting and useful way. We know how difficult it is to adapt to the mechanics of a particular game for another. This can be aggravated when you choose to use 120 fps (as the console is a bit overloaded in certain situations), but despite being interesting, it will be more interesting to bet on a more modest version with less flaws.
Nero offers a possibility to have some help from a “special arm” that he can exchange with others, with alternative skills. In particular, thanks to the combination with some iconic weapons, namely, the Red Queen Gunblade. In turn, the character “V” offers something that we have not yet seen in the Devil May Cry series, such as the summoning of demons that fight for you. We give the order and they fulfill, one by one, what was intended for them.
In truth, there is not much to add to what was released in 2019, apart from the fact that this new generation brings opportunities never before seen in the Devil May Cry series – from the graphic quality, the abundance of enemies, as well as the fluidity of the gameplay that undoubtedly improves the experience – and that raises the level of this fifth edition, but above all, of the series in its entirety. Sincerely, Capcom is to be congratulated for the job well done in the first version of the game, but the Special Edition further highlights the feat.
The Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition for Playstation 5 exemplifies the potential of the new generation (and we are not talking about a new generation game). The famous “loading screens”? Almost nonexistent. The loading time is so short, that even the game itself was not prepared. It even shows us some labels that disappear immediately thanks to the incredible read and write speed of the new SSD. We enter any menu, select the game mode and enter almost immediately. Do you want something better than this?
It is impossible not to recommend this title to anyone, especially those who have not yet played the game of 2019, or who have never even known the Devil May Cry series. Even more, for lovers of conceptual art from the Japanese video game industry. It is undoubtedly something that Capcom can be proud of having entered the market, even more, for just € 39.99.
Finally, I would like to thank Ecoplay for allowing us to enjoy a fantastic experience under this mythical title, especially the Special Edition that fills the Devil May Cry series (under the responsibility of Capcom) with all the “affection” ”It deserves.
