Researchers have developed smart clothes that already look more “normal”

The built-in sensors can help train athletes and give robots touch-sensitive ‘skin’. Wearable technology is often useful, but rarely as comfortable as your favorite shirt. MIT CSAIL can now make technology absolutely comfortable.

His researchers say they have developed smart clothes whose “touch electronics” can track even more subtle body movements, while seeking to behave like the soft, breathable clothing that many would wear every day.

Textiles are knitted by machines using both conventional material and piezoresistive fibers that react to pressure and maintain 3D shapes arbitrarily. Machine learning helps to calibrate and correct sensors to produce consistent results. Neural networks, however, produce sequences of input into the most usable data, and predicts postures.

The initial prototypes cover a wide range of possibilities. Gloves can detect what you touch, while socks can tell when you are crouching or standing on your toes. A smart vest can recognize poses and even the texture of the couch you’re sitting on. There is also a sleeve that reacts to the pressure on the arm. The technology is made with accessible materials and would be relatively easy to mass produce. CSAIL provides a range of uses for humans. Athletes will be able to record their postures and help newbies to perfect their form.

Assisted athletes will be able to get help sooner if there are signs that they have had a fall. However, technology can even help robots – we can teach robots to imitate tasks, or give them a “skin” with the advanced sense of touch that they don’t normally have. In other words, this can be useful even if it doesn’t become part of your wardrobe.
