Researchers develop backpack AI system to guide visually impaired users

The system uses a 4K space camera and Intel technology for image processing, and a Bluetooth headset, which allows users to control the system with their voice. You can be asked to describe the environment or save GPS locations under a specific name.

Jagadish K. Mahendran of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Georgia, and researchers at the University of Georgia have developed a system of backpacks to help visually impaired users understand and be able to walk around. The backpack uses a Luxonis OAK-D space camera, which has an AI processor, incorporating ‘on-chip’ and uses technology from Intel Movidius – in an image processing technology system.

The 4K camera, which captures depth information as well as color images, is packed inside a vest or in a wrapper. The system uses Intel’s OpenVINO toolkit, and can run for up to eight hours using a pocket battery housed in the housing. The backpack holds a lightweight computing device with a GPS unit.

You can also read and identify road signs and also changes in elevation. You can, for example, inform the user that there is a stop sign on the way, and a crosswalk, or inform them when there is a sidewalk in front of them.

The researchers plan to open the project’s source code. They suggest that the system is discreet, and will not attract attention while it is used in public. The disadvantage is having to carry a backpack everywhere. Perhaps in the not too distant future, researchers will be able to find a way to pack this type of technology in a pair of smart glasses.
