Ratchet & Clank returns, after five years, with “Rift Apart” or, in Portuguese, “a dimension apart” addressing the theme of the original series, however, this game contextualizes a dimensional collapse scenario, after an incident with the “Dimensionador” — an instrument that allows changing space-time in order to be able to transport itself through portals — caused by the fearsome Dr. Nefários, antagonist in the series.
The game, developed by Insomniac Games, is dubbing in Portuguese from Portugal and is a PlayStation 5 exclusive that offers some of the best features on the next generation console. This title adds content to the series — which began in 2002 with its launch on the PlayStation console — and shows itself as the precursor to the story of Ratchet and Clank, surrounded by new characters with very solid narratives.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart brought with it nostalgia for the heyday of PlayStation 2, where it spent hours playing the original title. The difference was the graphics and the theme, because in essence the gameplay and objectives are maintained. It’s gratifying to see that Insomniac Games still manages to bring an enjoyable game even if the fundamental formula remains unchanged. Ratchet & Clank remains one of the most successful exclusives in the history of Sony Interactive Entertainment and the PlayStation brand itself.
Narrative of Rift Apart — very complete and structured
Ratchet & Clank brought a whole immersive story, which even in parallel realities offers a new narrative base for new characters. Between protagonists and antagonists. Dr. Nefarios joins in “Rift Apart” as antagonist, on the other hand, Rivet, Ratchet’s homonymous character — in the parallel universe — in which Clank joins Rivet, instead of being with Ratchet.
During our progress in history, we are advancing between different universes and realities due to the distortion of space-time caused by the malfunction of the “Dimensional” that was damaged in a dispute between Ratchet and Nefarios. From here on, our game will focus part of the action on finding a solution to restore normalcy. We’ll be ready to follow the adventure in Ratchet & Clank: “a dimension apart” with Rivet our new protagonist in this completely changed new universe.
These multiple universes are rigorously filled with a multitude of new scenarios and completely different worlds. Insomniac’s effort in creating this masterpiece is evident, especially after the success of the 2016 release — the remastering of the original title — which weighed heavily on the shoulders of the development team in order to meet the standards demanded by the publishing community. Ratchet & Clank.
Avoiding going into great detail about the narrative content, I think what we liked most was the narrative structure – an almost perfection in the combination of gameplay with the presence of cut-scenes (very solid and fluid) that allowed us to understand, with great clarity, the direction of the adventure story of Ratchet, but especially of Rivet, who plays the main role in “Rift Apart” and with whom we spent a large part of the game — thus, the conditions for a narrative of excellence are met.
Atmosphere and Graphics
Talking about narrative without talking about setting is a step towards making inconsistencies in the context addressed in the narrative excerpt. The alteration of space-time leads to a whole series of events that serve as a stage for all the action of Ratchet & Clank: a dimension apart, as we constantly change the scenic space, making it quite immersive.
These new worlds combined with a high detail of characters, as textures of buildings or objects, allows a reality check when compared to other games in the saga, in the past. The console power limitation didn’t make titles that today are seen as “something of the past” less pleasurable or immersive because we were looking at well-constructed titles. Here it didn’t differ, but I confess that PlayStation 5 helped to create that environment.
Saturated with the limitations of a console with more than 6 years, it is natural that, looking at games designed and designed for a new generation, it is something that motivates the accumulation of praise — since they are not available on PC and there is no reality check until the emergence of a new platform or new hardware — but that’s not an exaggeration. Ratchet & Clank have without a doubt, within the category of “Adventure” one of the best settings — given the complexity of creating new worlds.
Speaking of performance, it would be unfair to talk about graphics processing when the new generation brought something more than just more power. The load time — incredibly fast — is the real killer (compared to other games), as it virtually removes the need for “loading” when loading a cut-scene or space pass. The data processing by internal storage is amazing and the team, knowing this, took advantage of this technology to provide players with memorable in-game experiences.
As for graphics, it’s no secret that the existence of two modes of performance or graphic quality makes it possible to customize the player’s desired experience. Those looking for greater loyalty can do so easily by opting for the resolution mode, or more “fps” through the performance mode. This requirement was fulfilled as expected, especially in resolution mode — not having experienced any significant breakage or “frame-drop”.
As soon as we reach the characters chapter, we are confronted with some of the most iconic characters in the series, notwithstanding Rivet and Nik (a character identical to Clank in the parallel universe) who help Ratchet by replacing Clank on his journey. This game marks the return of Dr. Nefários, however, as a stronger character, in which, after the changes caused by the “Dimensional”, he starts to control the entire universe in another dimension, becoming an implacable emperor.
Among the familiar characters, Captain Qwark also returns, a controversial character who was antagonistic in the original game, however, in other titles in the series, he became an aid to Ratchet in intergalactic defense. Seen as a superhero in his homeland, Copernicus Leslie Qwark is not always dedicated to doing good and has some tendency to join the enemy—when it becomes more favorable or has some benefit of its own.
Regardless of the whole plot, Ratchet & Clank: “a dimension apart” brought characters that have a lot of fun while we play or live (in-game) with them, especially the new characters that open up a whole range of opportunities for the future of the series which has been in existence for over 19 years. Rivet, despite being similar to Ratchet offers a whole important experience, as it allows not only a different approach to the story but also contributes, in some way, to a more inclusive community where we are given the possibility to play with a female character.
We feel, however, that the least worked part of this game was precisely the offer of new specifications or abilities of the character himself, who ends up sharing the same abilities and weaponry as Ratchet. On the one hand, this would make some sense because it is a parallel universe, where the similarities are evident, however, we can also claim that in another universe, there could be other weapons or even new abilities that were unique to Rivet, given his life experience (in her universe), where, like Ratchet, she has to deal with dangers and unexpected situations motivated by Emperor Nefarios.
Gameplay — familiar and free
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is, in its category, one of the titles that offers the best gaming experience. Counting on a smooth gameplay, free of imperfections, it beautifully combines the offered environment (as above) with the stability provided by the new generation of consoles. It’s also here that we again see DualSense leveraging in-game, with some of the unique tools being used frantically.
Rift Apart, although new to the saga, offers similar mechanics to its predecessors, so if you’re familiar with the Ratchet & Clank series, you won’t find it difficult to adapt to this new game. By the way, playing Ratchet & Clank has never been so simple, however, be aware that there are some difficulties that will add dynamism to the game. The confrontations, even if sometimes repetitive, involve a large volume of ammunition — which is limited — and if not well managed, they can compromise the performance of the tasks.
In combat, the game dynamic varies depending on the amount of enemies, but we never stop being in the center of the action, as long as we make the right choices, we have every chance to deal with the most elementary to the most powerful (the bosses). Even in the wildest situations, the game doesn’t show any break in immersiveness or action, demonstrating the balance between performance and graphics. On top of that, the character animations also deserved special attention, as we see some reactions (bodily or tics) of the characters to the actions we do while fighting, running, jumping, among others (actions).
What we also appreciated in this new title in the Ratchet & Clank saga was the freedom we always had, both in combat and in the progression in missions through the universes and worlds of “Rift Apart”. So, in general, the opinion is very positive and certainly makes this game a “must-have” for all those who like adventure games, especially when played in 4K at 60 fps.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was an incredible throwback to my childhood back when I was playing with Ratchet and Clank on PlayStation 2. What impressed the most was, without a shadow of a doubt, the quality of the narrative and, after that, the ambiance and graphic quality that is far above other similar proposals on the market, having enjoyed good moments with Rivet, the lombax that brought the essence of the series to a new level.
Finally, and whenever justified, I could not fail to thank the dubbing of the game in Portuguese from Portugal, showing the concern for investing in the diversity of the community, not only offering base languages, but a much greater variety. The game dubbing market in Portugal has been growing and this precisely consolidates that fact with more and more PlayStation exclusives dubbed in Portuguese.
This is certainly a game that we recommend to the entire community, but especially those who have enjoyed playing the games in this series in the past. It is true that we are talking about an adventure game, but not just any game. In fact, we are of the opinion that games, whether adventure games or any type, are for all ages, whether they are the taste of the player or consumer in question.
We thank PlayStation Portugal for providing a copy of this title — Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart — which allowed Mais Tecnologia the free analysis of another PlayStation exclusive game like the one above.
