The Porsche 959 supercar was built from 1986 to 1993 and during this time it revolutionized the world of supercars. This technically advanced vehicle introduced some computer-controlled features and driving aids that had never been seen before in a road car.

This first technology vehicle is said to be the genesis of modern supercars that follow this formula of using technology for more usable performance.

Porsche went to the demanding Paris-Dakar rally to develop and then showcase its 959 supercars in the 1980s. The resulting victory helped to build an unlikely rally pedigree for this coveted Porsche supercar. To pay homage to the Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar rally, manufacturers can also enter their latest supercars at the event to see if they can finish this difficult race. Can you imagine seeing a Porsche 918 chasing a McLaren Senna on the ground?

Powered by a flat-6 biturbo engine, the Porsche 959 produced 444 hp (331 kilowatts) and 500 kilos of torque. This impressive engine was coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission that sent energy to the ground through an electronically controlled all-wheel drive system.

This impressive system was the first for Porsche, and allowed both drivers and computers to determine how to manage the power of the 959. This unique drivetrain produced impressive performance, on and off the road, leading Porsche to enter the Paris- Dakar in 1986, where he got a first and a second place.

Seeing these mud-covered supercars on a rally stage is the excellence of motorsport and a perfect display of Porsche’s mastery of the integration of new technologies in motorsports. Is there anything the Porsche 959 cannot do, and could this supercar survive the toughest rally in the world? If you happen to have a Porsche 959 you can answer with confidence, “yes”.
