It was announced by Cruise on January 14, 2019 that the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible films will be shot consecutively with McQuarrie writing and directing the two films on July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022, respectively. In February 2019, Rebecca Ferguson actress in the role of Ilsa Faust, a former MI6 agent, confirmed her return for the seventh film.
In September 2019, McQuarrie announced on his Instagram account that Hayley Atwell had joined the cast for the seventh film. In November 2019, Pom Klementieff joined the cast for both the seventh and eighth film. In December 2019, Simon Pegg confirmed his return to the film, with Shea Whigham joining the cast of both films. Nicholas Hoult was cast for a role in January 2020, along with the addition of Henry Czerny, playing his role as Eugene Kittridge for the first time since the 1996 film. Vanessa Kirby also announced that she would return for both films. In May 2020, it was reported that Esai Morales would be replacing Hoult’s role as the villain in both films due to scheduling conflicts. Under the tentative title of Libra, filming was scheduled to start on February 20, 2020 in Venice, lasting three weeks before moving to Rome in mid-March for 40 days, but due to the COVID pandemic -19 in Italy, production in the country was delayed.
Three weeks later, rehearsals began to take place in Surrey, England, just before a hiatus. On 6 July 2020, after another hiatus, the team arriving in the UK was allowed to start filming without going through the mandatory 14-day quarantine. The set is located at Warner Bros Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire.
The following month, similar permission was granted to film in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. In the same month, a great fire broke out on a platform in Oxfordshire. The scene took six weeks to prepare and was “among one of the most expensive scenes ever filmed in the UK.” No one was injured in the incident. Mission: Impossible 7 is a future 2022 spy action film written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and played by Tom Cruise, who reprises his role as Ethan Hunt.
It will be the seventh feature in the Mission: Impossible film series and the third film in the series to be directed by McQuarrie, after Rogue Nation and Fallout. Esai Morales as the villain in the film Angela Bassett as Erika Sloane, director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Additionally, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff and Shea Whigham were cast in undisclosed roles. Filming began on September 6, 2020. In October 2020, filming was confirmed across Norway; the previous edition was filmed in Preikestolen. Norwegian locations for the film’s shooting include Stranda and Rauma counties, with Cruise filming an action scene with Esai Morales on top of a train.
