We live in a fascinating time: as with the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century, the Digital Revolution of the 21st century has had a huge impact on all sectors of the economy. The Portuguese are increasingly using their mobile phones, making more and more purchases online, using more and more digital services from the state and… they have also been investing more and more via the Internet.

According to a study by the EGBA (the European Gaming and Betting Association), 17.8% of all casino and sports betting activities in Portugal are already done via the Internet. Taking into account that the EGBA statistical data are for the year 2019, there is no doubt that the percentage of online gambling in Portugal increased even more in 2020 and 2021.

The growing popularity of online gaming services has led to the granting of more and more gaming licenses in Portugal. Nowadays, there are almost two dozen different 100% legal online services available to the Portuguese. Application comparison sites like they can therefore serve as a useful guide to choosing the best online casino or sports betting application in Portugal.

In Europe, more and more games are played over the Internet

The EGBA statistical report is revealing as far as online gaming is concerned. Nowadays, digital services have been occupying the space that previously belonged to physical casinos. In Sweden and Denmark, more is played over the Internet than in traditional spaces; according to the EGBA, the gaming markets of the two Nordic countries are dominated by online gaming. In Sweden, the share of the market occupied by digital services stands at 58.8%, while Denmark stands at 54.6%.

Next comes the United Kingdom (45.3%), a country with a strong gaming culture but where online betting and casino applications have gained a surprising number of fans. the British market of online gambling it is only comparable to “giants” like the United States or Australia. At the top of the EGBA ranking there are even smaller countries, such as Finland (42.6%), Slovakia (39.8%), Estonia (39.1%) or Lithuania (37.2%).

Portugal ahead of Spain and Italy

In terms of market percentages, Portugal is still one of the countries in Europe where the least is played online. However, this factor can be explained by the fact that Portugal is a country with a strong casino culture, a mild and pleasant climate and a reference tourist sector. Proof of this is that Portugal was ahead of countries like Spain (12.2%) and Italy (10.6%).

Right after Portugal comes France, where 19.2% of all gaming is already processed through virtual services. It is possible that these Mediterranean countries are at the bottom of the EGBA ranking not because of the size of their online gaming markets, but because of the size of their global gaming markets. After all, it is estimated that more than 5% of the Portuguese population has passed through casino and online betting sites in 2020, as there were around 675,000 active Portuguese users in the last quarter of last year.
