OnePlus is preparing the first smartphone without Qualcomm

OnePlus started in the market with only one smartphone and with the top it was trying to diversify its products, first with smartphones placed in other market segments, such as the Nord N100 and Nord 10, and more recently it even launched its first smartwatch.

All this time, however, the OnePlus has been solidly a home of smartphones with various Qualcomm components, with a focus on processors and other related hardware aspects. But, it seems that it is also planning to diversify in that area as well and, as it could only be, Mediatek could be the next partnership of OnePlus in the smartphone business.

While it hasn’t actually disappeared from the market, MediaTek’s mobile processors seemed to have taken a back seat during Qualcomm’s aggressive 5G onslaught, making a wide variety of processors available to all market segments with the new connectivity.

MediaTek, however, bet heavily with its Dimensity 5G processors to the point of overtaking Qualcomm as the world’s largest mobile chip company last year and earlier this year. Convincing OnePlus to use their processors won’t make Qualcomm tremble, but it certainly shows that MediaTek is doing a good job.

At first, it was believed that OnePlus’ first MediaTek devices would be its next Nord phones, considering that this is exactly the market where the processor manufacturer leads. However, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is believed to work with a Snapdragon 750G and the OnePlus Nord N200 5G could also be way below the price ranges for this latest OnePlus phone with Dimension.

According to a Chinese leak on Weibo, via GSMArena, a prototype of a OnePlus with Dimensity 1200 “looks good”. The phone is being compared to the OnePlus 9 Pro in terms of design and also features a 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor. He’s also running OxygenOS, which means the mobile device should be aimed at the international market.

Another thing is that the Dimensity 1200 is MediaTek’s high-end 5G processor and is probably better suited for a high-end phone from OnePlus. It’s true that the manufacturer has just launched the OnePlus 9, but are they thinking of launching a device in the mid-high range segment? A OnePlus 9 Lite? We will have to wait a little longer to see.
