OnePlus is finally putting into practice its camera partnership with Hasselblad. This new update is bringing the look and feel of Hasselblad’s XPan film camera to the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. with the historic chambers mark.
While Hasselblad’s contribution to these phones was limited to helping OnePlus adjust camera colors and provide information in its interface earlier this year, as Allison Johnson noted in her review of OnePlus 9 , “Hasselblad’s color adjustment it’s good, but nothing remarkable”.
This update adds an XPan Mode to the OnePlus 9 Series camera, along with some much-needed practical patches. XPan Mode replicates the focal lengths, colors and processing of the original XPan camera to the mobile phone, allowing you to capture wide-ratio images.
The Hasselblad XPan was the first 35mm dual-frame camera on the market that allowed photographers to capture panoramic photos at the time of capture. Hasselblad XPan has a physical switch that helped photographers switch between shooting single frames and two-frame (panoramic) photos.
Like the camera, XPan mode captures photos with an aspect ratio of 65:24 (8:3). “Images taken in XPan mode are cropped from the 48 MP main camera [OnePlus Série 9] and the 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera instead of the standard 12MP mode,” according to the press release.
There’s also the option of taking panoramic photos at focal lengths of 30mm or 45mm, mimicking the classic Hasselblad camera lens. The user can compose and view their photos by switching between the two views within the OnePlus camera app.
Taking advantage of the OnePlus 9 Series’ 2-megapixel monochrome camera, XPan Mode takes pictures in black and white by default, but you can switch to color to capture images.
This update will be released on OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro starting today, September 17, 2021.
