Microsoft finally made a Windows Package Manager available to everyone

You probably don’t realize it, but you need a command line Windows Package Manager in your life. The good news is that this is no longer the reserve of your friends who use Linux, or of third-party applications, since Microsoft finally realized the error of its methods and made the application available to everyone.

You are probably wondering why you need a command line package manager in the first place, and the answer is speed. It gives you access to applications from a variety of sources without the need to scour dubious websites, avoid unwanted downloads, or end up with the totally wrong application.

If you take care of multiple PCs, it also allows you to write some simple scripts that will load your machines with the applications you want.

Anyone working in IT is likely to be thrilled with just that inclusion. And we respect that. It should also make reinstalling Windows 10 an absolute breeze, as long as you are the organized type and keep a list of the apps you use.

How to install

The good news is that you can access it right now. If you are part of the Windows Insider build program, you probably already have it.

If not, you can get it on any Windows 10 installation by pointing to this blog post about Windows Package Manager in your browser and clicking on the ‘directly install’ link in the ‘How do I get it’ section.

Once installed, you can start the new Windows Package Manager Powershell (right-click on the Windows start flag and select it).

Just type ‘winget’ to make sure it’s working and then you can eavesdrop with your command line.

It is relatively early for the application and not everything is listed in the repositories yet, but it should improve over time. You can also use the winget app to get all the latest versions of installed apps – just type upgrade winget to see what’s available.
