Epic Games announced New software tool Browser-based and powered by Unreal Engine called MetaHuman that can craft ultra-realistic human faces and help enhance realistic body movements and face animations.
And Epic Games peeked at the platform today via videos showing examples of the creations created with MetaHuman.
Metahuman appears to be the term the company uses to describe this brand to a hypothetical, non-real individual.
Epic Games says MetaHuman can be used in conjunction with state-of-the-art motion capture and animation technologies to create photorealistic motion and human interaction scenes designed for video games, movies, TV and other formats.
She added: Metahuman can be produced within minutes and equipped with unique hairstyles and clothing, so they can be further customized to meet production needs.
Metahuman characters can be manipulated in real time within the tool itself and using only the web browser.
One of the most difficult tasks in creating 3D content was building masked digital humans, Vladimir Mastilovic, Epic Games vice president of digital human technology, said in a statement: Even more experienced artists require a great deal of time, effort, and equipment for just one character .
“After decades of research and development, thanks to bringing companies like 3Lateral, Cubic Motion and Quixel into the Epic Games family, that barrier has been erased by Unreal Engine, and we’re excited to introduce MetaHuman,” he added.
The humans created with the new Epic Games tool do not come close to the realism of digital imagery of fake people produced by generative adversarial networks, the AI technology that underpins projects such as This Person Does Not Exist.
As a tool for creating videogame characters, it’s clear that MetaHuman is able to make some people look shockingly real.
It is unclear when Epic Games intends to release MetaHuman, but interested developers and artists can sign up for updates via the Unreal Engine website.
