Mediatek surpasses Qualcomm for the first time in the sale of processors

It is not so difficult to see that Qualcomm and MediaTek on smartphones are similar to Intel and AMD on computers, with Qualcomm practically holding the largest share of the smartphone processor market, while MediaTek is often considered the most affordable option at the expense of some performance.

Like AMD, however, MediaTek is also making an even more aggressive effort, especially at the mid-range 5G level. It seems that some of this may have been worth it, at least in the third quarter of 2020, although Qualcomm still holds an important part of the pie, being the latest report from Counterpoint Research.

According to this report, MediaTek first overtook Qualcomm in the third quarter of 2020 in the number of processor shipments. According to the data, MediaTek had a 31% market share during this quarter, up from 26% last year, while Qualcomm saw its share drop from 31% to 29%. It is certainly important data for MediaTek, however we also know that the market is more dynamic.

Some factors contributed to MediaTek’s jump in chip sales, from COVID-19 to a greater demand for mid-range smartphones in Latin America and the EMEA region. Huawei’s ban in the U.S. also helped MediaTek gain a more secure foothold in the last quarter, with more phones using its processors being sold to offset Huawei’s withdrawal that has caused many users to stop purchasing Chinese manufacturer smartphones to the detriment of other medium-low range equipment with Google applications.

In addition, it should be borne in mind that Qualcomm has also already announced a new high-end processor that will equip smartphones in 2021 and with that it can also make users wait for the next top devices that start arriving early on. 2021.

That said, MediaTek doesn’t exactly have clear leadership, especially with such a narrow margin. Qualcomm still has a stronger share in top.on models in the market.

And then there’s the fact that Qualcomm still leads the race when it comes to 5G processors, that is. MediaTek has really been trying to flood the mid-range market with its 5G capable processors, but they are still too far away and few in the middle to make a signal on the radar.
