James Bond has a new home: Amazon and MGM have announced a definitive merger agreement under which Amazon will acquire MGM for $ 8.45 billion, confirming last week’s rumor.

MGM, founded in 1924, complements Amazon Studios, whose main focus is the production of TV programming, the companies said. Amazon will help “preserve MGM’s film heritage and catalog” and provide customers with greater access to these existing works, the companies added in an official statement on the deal, clearly implying that (at least) much of the company’s portfolio MGM is expected to be available on Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video.

For Amazon, acquiring MGM – which has more than 4,000 films and 17,000 TV shows in its catalog – is a way to boost its Prime Video service with a number of well-known entertainment titles. In addition, Amazon is anticipating the possibility of taking advantage of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer properties such as Pink Panther, Rocky and, yes, the 007 franchises for new originals.

“The real financial value behind this business is the treasure of [propriedade intelectual] in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop with the talented MGM team, ”said Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, when announcing the deal. “It is very exciting and offers many opportunities for a high quality narrative.” Hopkins noted that MGM productions collectively won more than 180 Oscars and 100 Emmys, with the studio having around 800 employees worldwide.

The MGM deal is the second largest acquisition by Amazon, after its $ 13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods in 2017. Amazon did not say when it expects to close the acquisition of MGM, which is subject to regulatory and other approvals. conditions, however, some experts believe the deal will be approved by the end of 2021.

Among the film titles that Hopkins called for when announcing the MGM deal were “Rocky”, “Robocop”, “Stargate”, “Tomb Raider” and, of course, the James Bond series. In front of the TV, the Amazon executive quoted “Fargo”, “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Vikings”.
