The two premium “Pro” models in the next line of the iPhone 13 will be equipped with a low-power LTPO display, allowing iPhones to have a refresh rate of 120 Hz, according to industry sources cited by the Taiwanese publication DigiTimes.

According to the access report paid out Today, Apple’s suppliers, Samsung and LG Display, are in the process of converting parts of their production capacity to produce OLED LTPO panels for Apple’s next iPhone. The complete conversion of production from LTPS to LTPO monitors is likely to be completed in the first half of 2021.

Even with the transfer to LTPO production completed in the first half of the year, capacity will be less than previously due to additional steps in the development process.

Samsung Display and LG Display, now offering OLED LTPS screens for iPhones, are proceeding with the conversion of capacity to LTPO on their dedicated Apple OLED 6G lines, with the conversion likely completed in the first half of 2021, the sources said, add that this production capacity will drop due to the oxide step added when LTPS is converted to LTPO.

Along with the Samsung and LG monitors, Apple is looking to add the Chinese display manufacturer BOE to its list of LTPO monitor suppliers for the iPhone 13, although previous information points out that this manufacturer has repeatedly failed quality control tests . BOE is testing LTPO panels in a new section “dedicated to Apple” at one of its factories in China. The report notes that BOE “obtained authorization from Apple to provide OLED panels in December 2020”.

Last year, Apple was expected to adopt LTPO monitors on its iPhones 2020, giving them a 120 Hz ProMotion refresh rate. Despite an avalanche of reports, display analyst Ross Young accurately predicted in July of the year past that it would not debut on the iPhone 12 line, but instead provides 120Hz on the iPhones 2021.

A plausible obstacle that Apple may be facing is the increase in power consumption that a higher refresh rate presents. In this regard, DigiTimes informs that the iPhone 13 Pro models will have reduced power consumption by 15 to 20%, even with the newest monitors. Although not mentioned in the report, the improved energy efficiency is probably due to the A15 chip that will power the new devices.

Apple debuted ProMotion on its iPad Pro 2017, but has yet to make it to the iPhone. The higher refresh rate of 120 Hz compared to today’s 60 Hz offers a smoother experience when rolling and playing.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also believes that the next models of the iPhone 13 Pro will have screens with a higher refresh rate. Leaker Max Weinbach believes that, in addition to a refresh rate of 120 Hz, iPhones 2021 devices will always have screens active.
