Apple last week released beta versions of upcoming iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 updates to developers and public beta testers, and among a number of new features, the company added the ability to set the default music streaming service when using Siri to play songs.
Currently, Siri searches for and plays things from whatever music you have in the Apple Music app, whether it’s your own song collection or Apple Music subscription list.
And users discovered platform Reddit that after installing iOS 14.5, Siri asks which music service you want to use when you ask it to play a song.
Siri gives you the option to choose from a list of third-party music-streaming apps in addition to Apple Music, and then it requests permission to access the data from the music app of your choice.
Siri then switches to service by default afterwards when asked to play a song, for example, if Spotify is selected and you say ‘Hey Siri, run Moonlight Drive by The Doors, you no longer need to select Spotify to prevent the voice assistant from trying to play the track across Apple Music.
And as noted, Siri also sets the music streaming service as the default if you ask it to run from that specific app for the first time.
And according to users who have tried this feature, it only works with specific phrases at the moment, and sometimes it reverts to Apple Music, so it looks like there’s still some work that Apple needs to do before it’s completely consistent.
Currently, you can ask Siri to play music from other services, but you have to specify which service you want to play each time, otherwise, you should be asking about Apple Music.
IOS 14.5 is the largest update to iOS 14 so far, as it introduces many important new features, including the ability to use the Apple Watch to unlock an iPhone using Face ID while wearing a mask and support levers for next-generation gaming platforms.
After years of having to virtually use Apple’s services over the iPhone, the company has begun to loosen those restrictions a bit.
It is not clear when iOS 14.5 will be ready for everyone, but 14.4 was only released a few weeks ago, so it will likely be at the end of the month or early March.
