Motional and Hyundai Motor Group unveil robotaxi based on Hyundai IONIQ 5, Motional’s next-generation robotaxi.
Based on the 100% electric Hyundai IONIQ 5, released worldwide earlier this year, the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi is a tier 4 autonomous vehicle, operated safely without driver. It is an emission-free robotaxi and represents the combination of two technologies, the most transformative in mobility – electrification and autonomy. The combination of these technologies makes transport safer, smarter and more sustainable.
The IONIQ 5 Robotaxi is Motional’s first commercial vehicle and marks a key milestone in the company’s strategy. Motional will begin public passenger transport on the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi in 2023 through a partnership with Lyft.
IONIQ 5 Robotaxi
The IONIQ 5 Robotaxi integrates a design technology-oriented, which celebrates the innovation behind autonomous operation. The vehicle’s set of sensors are mostly on the outside, distinguishing the robotaxi from a conventional vehicle. The robotaxi has more than 30 sensors – a combination of cameras, radars and to lead – which provides 360° perception, high-resolution images and long-range object detection for safe autonomous operation in diverse driving situations.
The robotaxi will be equipped with Motional’s proven autonomous driving technology, which includes driving systems. machine learning advanced – built on decades of real data – that allow the vehicle to operate safely in challenging and complex driving situations.
Based on the Global-Electric Modular Platform (E-GMP), Hyundai Motor Group’s exclusive electric vehicle platform, the interior of the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi provides passengers with a spacious and comfortable cabin to work, relax or socialize while driving autonomous.
The interior will also integrate a set of passenger-centric features, which will allow them to intuitively interact with the vehicle during their journey, such as, for example, redirecting the robotaxi to make an additional stop. The result of this passenger experience will set new standards for autonomous driving for transport and goods.
Designed from the ground up to be operated entirely in autonomous driving, the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi was created through a partnership between Motional and the Hyundai Motor Group. The two companies worked together throughout development, with each party providing critical expertise: Motional in autonomous driving technology and Hyundai in global vehicle research and development and production capabilities.
The end result is a seamless integration between the vehicle’s configuration and bodywork, with the hardware and autonomy working in concert for highly advanced, safe and capable autonomous driving operation. The IONIQ 5 Robotaxi is built on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP, for ultra-fast charging and long range, allowing maximum utilization of Motional’s robotaxis fleet. The IONIQ 5 Robotaxi integrates the Group’s advanced safety and reliability, uniquely positioning it for an effective marketing price.

Motional and Hyundai Motor Group’s attention to passenger safety and comfort is evident throughout the vehicle. There are safety redundancies in all equipment, such as navigation, steering, braking and power, for safe and quiet driving. Motional also offers Remote Vehicle Assistance (RVA) if the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi encounters an unusual scenario, such as under construction or flooded roads. If so, a Motional remote operator can immediately connect to the vehicle and redirect it to a new path.
