Google prepares new update for Chrome to fix vulnerabilities

Google is preparing a new update for Chrome 89 after another exploit that takes advantage of a vulnerability in its open source JavaScript and the V8 web assembly mechanism was discovered on the loose.

In total, the new update addresses two vulnerabilities that affect V8 and the Chrome Blink rendering engine. In January, V8 was found to suffer from a high-severity heap buffer overflow corruption bug. Now, however, a new V8 vulnerability (tracked as CVE-2021-21220) is being addressed along with a use-after-free bug in Blink (tracked as CVE-2021-21206).

The Blink vulnerability was discovered by Bruno Keith and Niklas Baumstark of Dataflow Security during the recent Pwn2Own competition from the Zero Day Initiative.

Although they have not released any proof of concept (PoC) code, security researcher Rajvardhan Agarwal developed an exploit for the vulnerability and recently posted to Twitter.

Chrome update

On a new post on the Chrome Releases blog, Google explained that exploits for the Blink vulnerability and the V8 vulnerability “exist in freedom”.

Although the Chrome Stable channel has been updated for Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the browser and version 89.0.4389.128 is expected to be released in the coming days / weeks, cybercriminals can still try to take advantage of these vulnerabilities in their attacks.

This is because cybercriminals with advanced coding skills often try to reverse engineer patches to find out what they protect against, allowing them to target unpatched deployments.

Chrome users should update their browsers to the latest version as soon as it becomes available as the best security measure. And not only chrome, but all applications must always be updated to avoid this type of danger.

That way, everyone protects themselves from any potential exploits that take advantage of these vulnerabilities.
