Announced Google today announced the opening of its first-ever physical retail store this summer in the Chelsea area of New York City
Google said: The new Google Store in Chelsea will be a space in which customers can experience our devices and services in a useful way.
Customers within the Google Store can browse and buy a wide range of products made by Google, such as Pixel phones, Nest products, Fitbit devices and Pixelbooks, or they can shop online and receive their orders in the store.
Visitors throughout the retail space can also experience how Google products and services work together via a variety of immersive ways, more of which Google shares as the doors open.
Google also has in-store experts to help visitors get the most out of their devices, such as troubleshooting, fixing a broken screen, or helping customers with installations.
In announcing the launch, the company said: It doesn’t matter if you are a longtime Pixel user, are curious about our Nest screens or want to participate in one of our year-round guided workshops, and our team can provide you with special and customized assistance for your needs.
And Google thought about entering physical retailing in the past, after it tried pop-up stores where people can browse new products when they are announced for the first time, and it has also created mini experiences within Best Buy stores.
However, apart from these small experiences, it previously chose to focus on its website for its products or sell it through regular retail channels to showcase its devices and services.
Google is following in the footsteps of Apple, which recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of opening its first retail store in Tysons Corner, Virginia, by opening an interactive space where people can come to try its products and get support from experts in the store.
However, such an approach is not without risks, as Microsoft has experimented with a chain of stores around the world dedicated to displaying their products and services in an effort to create an ecosystem around its brand.
However, Microsoft announced in the summer of 2020 that it was moving to close or re-employ its stores entirely.
Google said: It has built its store and its shopping experience with the impact of the Coronavirus in mind and focusing on the future in terms of how people shop in the store.
Measures required include limiting the number of customers, cleaning the store regularly, requiring guests to wear masks, social distancing, and using hand sanitizers while in the store.
The Google Store is part of Google’s headquarters in Chelsea, which houses many of the company’s more than 11,000 employees.
Google has been in New York for 20 years, and the company said: It views the store as a natural extension of its long-standing commitment to the city.
Google added: The new store is an important next step in our hardware journey to provide the best useful experience from Google, and we look forward to meeting many of our customers and hearing their feedback about the store so that we can continue to explore and experiment with the possibilities of actual retail space and build on the experience.
