Google has a second folding in progress

According to internet rumors, Google appears to be internally testing a second collapsible Pixel smartphone. The device is under development codenamed “Jumbojack”, which is referenced in a future version of Android 12 that Google identifies as “Android 12.1”. This is the last collapsible codename we’ve heard about on Google, after reports of another device called “Passport”.

Not much is known yet about the form Jumbojack might take, but 9to5Google has some important details. Apparently they have two screens, one that turns off when the device is folded up.

Rumors lead us to believe that we are meeting Samsung’s foldable-like design, which combines a small external display with a larger internal foldable display. There is still no data on screen size or internal specifications.

Interestingly, there is speculation that the codename Jumbojack could turn out to be a reference to Jack in the Box’s Jumbo Jack cheeseburger, an implication that the phone will double “hamburger style” as a Z Flip as opposed to “hot dog style” as a Z Fold. But like food, this speculation is best treated with a good pinch of salt.

Unlike Passport, which at the end of last June was still on track to be released in late 2021, although there is no indication as to when or even if Jumbojack will have an official commercial release.

There’s a big possibility that it’s just an internal prototype, designed to help build collapsible functionality like enhanced multitasking in Android itself. Regardless, its existence leads to wanting Google to take folding more seriously than it initially did when the company first appeared, which means it has set out to produce its first real competitor with its Pixel 6.
