Fujitsu Implements New 10 Petaflops Supercomputer for Use in World Class Research in Portugal

Fujitsu was selected to provide a new supercomputer under the European Union and Portuguese government initiative to develop world-class high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities for academic and business researchers.

The new system is called Deucalion, a name based on Greek mythology, and will be installed at MACC – Minho Advanced Computing Center in Portugal. Funding comes from the initiative EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The EuroHPC program aims to boost innovation and competitiveness in the EU with the availability at European level of supercomputing on a petascale scale – defined as the ability of a computer to execute more than one Petaflop, or one billion trillion calculations per second.

The supercomputer will support advanced scientific research in public and business sector applications, including medicine, bioengineering, weather forecasting, combating climate change and discovering new materials and medicines.

This robust and industry-leading technology will also contribute in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and the use of Big Data, playing a vital role in the digitization of Portugal and Europe as a whole.

In a contract valued at € 20 million, Fujitsu will supply MACC with its Fujitsu PRIMEHPC FX700 supercomputer, which incorporates the new Fujitsu A64FX processor based on ARM. This processor is enabling new research in vital areas and uses the same core technology as the Fugaku supercomputer, jointly developed by the Japanese research institute RIKEN and Fujitsu.

Fugaku recently topped the TOP500 list of the world’s fastest supercomputers. The Fujitsu A64FX processor offers exceptional energy efficiency while maintaining compliance with Arm v8.2-A Scalable Vector Extension (SVE), the ARM instruction set for high-performance servers.

In a public tender, EuroHPC and FCT selected Fujitsu due to its leadership in HPC technology, specialized consultancy and advisory services for HPC customers, as well as its proven ability to work in the supplier ecosystem necessary for the success of HPC projects.

Fujitsu has partnered with other leading brands to provide the total solution, including ATOS (x86 systems), DDN (storage) and Mellanox (interconnect). Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories will take advantage of decades of experience in the HPC domain to build and integrate this system.

New supercomputer helps to create Portuguese knowledge ecosystem for Research teams.

For Portugal, having an HPC Petascale system available is the first and most important step towards collaboration with key technological partners. The aim is to create a new knowledge ecosystem for Portuguese academic and industrial research teams. MACC will play a central role in the national research landscape, with this supercomputer as its main piece.
