Discord and Microsoft do not reach agreement … But it may not be the end

Last month, reports stated that the popular game-oriented chat, Discord, was considering a $ 10 billion sale to Microsoft. The community’s reception of this news was mixed, to say the least – many users feared for the privacy of their conversations or for new rules and restrictions imposed by the control of a technology giant.

However, they can breathe easy now. According to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, Discord’s negotiations with Microsoft failed: the first one left the negotiating table to reconsider its options. The newspaper says that Discord has “piqued the interest” of at least three companies over a potential sale so far, but it appears that none of its offers have been convincing.

While it is unclear exactly what ended the purchase negotiations between Discord and Microsoft, there are at least some contributing factors. First, WSJ sources say, Discord is happy with the way things are now. It is “performing well” (although it is not yet profitable) and would prefer to remain independent, at least for now.

Second, several reports suggest that Discord is considering the possibility of going public. Being bought by a tech giant would jeopardize those plans, so it may be understandable that the service doesn’t care about Microsoft (and presumably its other suitors).

At the end of the day, all we can do is speculate. Discord executives are the only ones who really know what the future of the platform will be like.

However, looking back at Microsoft’s past acquisitions of this type, Skype is one of the great examples that has hardly improved since it was bought by the American giant. In fact, this may be one of the biggest fears, since the example that Microsoft has with Slype is not the best, since the use of this application has dropped considerably in recent times.

However, it should be noted that Discord has very interesting features, such as robots that can be integrated into groups, such as Discord’s best music bots.
