Maps, Vehicles, Post-Release Plans and more have been detailed for the upcoming battlefield, and Electronic Arts has officially announced the release of Battlefield 2042 for consoles and PC on October 22nd.

During a live broadcast event held on Wednesday, EA and ‘developer’ DICE revealed the first details in 2042, and said it will be a multiplayer-only Game with support for 128-player battles on “massive scale” maps full of dynamic weather and other environmental hazards. On next-gen Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, the maximum number of players will be 64 players and map sizes will be reduced, DICE said.

EA said it will invite “Battlefield veterans” from the US and Europe for a closed technical test in early July, followed by an open beta sometime before October. 2042 introduces ‘Specialists’, a new type of playable soldier. Inspired by the four traditional Battlefield classes, ‘experts’ will be equipped with their own unique expert trait and specialty, and will have fully customizable loads.

“In Battlefield 2042, the world is on the brink,” reads EA’s official synopsis. “Scarcity of food, energy and clean water has led to dozens of failed nations, creating the biggest refugee crisis in human history. “Among these non-patriates, or non-patriates, are families, farmers, engineers – and even soldiers. In the midst of this crisis, the United States and Russia lead the world into an all-out war. No-Pat experts join both sides, not fighting for a flag, but for the future of the Unpatriates in this new world.”

At its core, 2042 will have three game modes, EA said. ‘All-Out Warfare’ is described as the next generation of fan-favorite modes, ‘Conquest & Advance’, featuring the franchise’s “greatest maps of all time” and support for up to 128 players. “Experience the intensity of Total War in large-scale battles like never before on maps filled with dynamic weather and dangerous environmental hazards and spectacular world events with map-ripping tornadoes and sandstorms blocking the sun,” the document said.

Another mode, ‘Hazard Zone’, is described as “an entirely new, high-risk, squad-based game type” that is “distinctly DICE” but “very different” from the Conquest or Evolution modes of Total War. This may be the mode described in a ‘leak’ earlier this week.

Finally, EA said that a third unannounced mode is in development at its DICE LA studio, described as “an exciting new kind of game” and “A love letter for Battlefield fans and one with which gamers have long date will feel at home”. EA will unveil the mode during its July 22 live event, ‘Play Live.

“Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what gamers crave – Battlefield’s ultimate multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of amazing and unexpected events,” said Oskar Gabrielson, general manager of DICE. “All of us at DICE in Stockholm, DICE LA, Criterion and EA Gothenburg had a lot of fun developing this game and now it’s time to let players get in on the action. What they’re going to find is that we’ve built three distinct and absolutely epic experiences that we think they’ll love. ”
