A web designer in Argentina recently managed to buy Google’s domain name for the country while it was down for just a few dollars.

Argentine Nicolas Kurona, 30, explained to the BBC who managed to buy google.com.ar through a normal legal process last week. However, he never expected that he could actually buy the domain name.

Kurona was working at home designing a website for a client outside Buenos Aires when he started receiving messages on WhatsApp that Google was down in Argentina. He navigated to the site and when it didn’t work, he thought “something strange was going on”.

After confirming that the Google Argentina website was down, Kurona accessed the website of the Network Information Center Argentina (NIC), responsible for operating the country code (.ar). He then searched for Google and saw that the Google domain in Argentina was available for purchase.

Although Kurona didn’t think it would work, he followed the necessary steps and received an email with a purchase invoice from google.com.ar. In total, he paid only 270 Argentine pesos or just under three US dollars ($ 2.90 / £ 2.08) for the site.
After purchasing the site, Kurona opened a browser and navigated to google.com.ar, where his personal data appeared. In a statement to the BBC , he explained that he had no bad intentions and just wanted to see if it would work, saying:

“I want to make it clear that I never had any bad intentions, I just tried to buy and NIC allowed it. When the purchase process was completed and my data came up, I knew something was going to happen… I was very anxious. ”

Since then, Google Argentina has regained control of its domain name. However, the reason why Kurona managed to buy the domain has not yet been discovered.

Although many believe that Google simply forgot to renew its domain name, the company says that the domain will not expire until July this year.
