Apple’s Mini HomePod includes a hidden sensor that can measure temperature and humidity

Apple’s mini HomePod includes an inactive hidden sensor that can measure temperature and humidity, potentially providing the means to leverage the next features that may arrive in a future software update.

According to the report by Mark Gurman: “The company has internally discussed using the sensor to determine the temperature and humidity of a room so that thermostats connected to the Internet can adjust different parts of a home based on current conditions, according to people familiar with the situation. . The hardware can also allow the ‌HomePod mini‌ to automatically trigger other actions, such as turning a fan on or off, depending on the temperature. ”

“Apple typically releases major HomePod software updates annually in the fall. It is unclear whether or when Apple will turn on the temperature sensor, but its presence in previously sold ‌HomePod mini unidades units suggests that this is only a matter of time. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. ”

The component measures 1.5 x 1.5 mm and is buried at the bottom edge of the ‌HomePod mini‌ plastic box, close to the power cable. The existence of the sensor was independently confirmed by iFixit after an investigation of the Bloomberg .

The sensor is manufactured by Texas Instruments, which calls it “HDC2010 Digital Humidity and Temperature Sensor”, according to TechInsights, a company that analyzes components inside electronics. According to the report, the component’s location suggests that its focus will be on the external environment, rather than having any internal diagnostic function.

“The part is located relatively far from the main internal components of the device, which means that it was designed to measure the external environment instead of the temperature of other electronic components of the speaker.”

This is not the first time that Apple has added a non-active component to a product and has subsequently enabled it through software. As noted by the Bloomberg , iPod touch 2008 had a Bluetooth chip, but support for Bluetooth connectivity was enabled the following year through software.

If Apple decides to enable the sensor on the ‌HomePod mini‌, it could pave the way for a more integrated smart home strategy for HomeKit, which controls thermostats, lights, locks, plugs and other devices at home.

As the report notes, it could also help Apple’s “HomeKit” to rival similar features already offered by competitors. For example.

Amazon’s latest Echo speakers include temperature sensors, while Google sells sensors under its Nest brand that can be placed in homes and connected to their thermostats to adjust the temperature of each room.
