Apple will “change music forever” with Apple Music Hifi

Just two weeks after rumors pointing to a new level of Apple Music Hi-Fi, which is a response to, also, the increase in sound quality that Spotify will launch soon, it seems that Apple will be able to take advantage in this “ war”.

Apple is planning a new level of HiFi for its Apple Music streaming service (which some sources claim to coincide with the launch of its upcoming AirPods 3 wireless headsets) and some clues have been found in the Apple Music source code.

As noted by the 9to5Mac, new references to ‘Lossless’ and ‘Hi Res Lossless’ appeared in the source code of the Apple Music web application, as well as the words ‘Dolby Audio’ and ‘Dolby Atmos’, which confirm the various rumors that have pointed out in this sense.

These new mentions presumably indicate that Apple Music tracks will soon be available in two lossless formats of superior quality. This corresponds to a report from the 9to5Google, which states that Apple Music for Android is preparing support for two “lossless” bit rates: 24 bits / 48kHz and 24 bits / 192kHz.

The strings in the Android app suggest that the highest quality lossless stream will consume up to 36MB of data for a single three-minute track – but there is apparently no mention of Dolby Atmos or Dolby Audio in the Apple Music 3.6 code for Android. Apple made a reference to both, in iOS 14.6 beta 1, but removed any mention of a high-fidelity service in beta 2.

The mentions of ‘Dolby Atmos’ and ‘Dolby Audio’ in the Apple Music web app may mean that some songs will be labeled this way and may support Apple’s Spatial Audio feature found in AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

If high-quality streaming really arrives with iOS 14.6 (scheduled to arrive in late May or early June), there is every chance that the Cupertino giant will defeat archrival Spotify.

To strengthen these rumors, Apple also put a teaser on the browser access to Apple Music, where we can see for fans to prepare: “Music is about to change forever”, being impossible not to associate this information with the recent rumors about the improvement in the sound quality that Apple intends to introduce to Apple Music. What remains to be seen is whether this increase in quality will bring an extra cost to current subscribers.
