Apple releases more details on how Spacial Audio will work with AirPods on Apple TV

It was during WWDC 2021 that Apple revealed its intention to update tvOS and M1 Macs later this year. The company’s goal is to enable owners of AirPods Pro and Max to take advantage of Spatial Audio.

However, the iPhone maker hasn’t provided much detail regarding how it plans to implement the feature on these systems. It is known, however, that this news will arrive this autumn.

For now, we already know some details regarding Spacial Audio. As assured by Apple, the feature will work with stereo content, 5.1, 7.1 and Dolby Atmos. Whether using a pair of AirPods or AirPods Max, the software that powers the feature will expand the sound stage so that it appears that the entire room the user is in is being filled with sound.

When the user sits down to watch a movie or TV show, the head tracking feature will be blocked after detecting that the user has been looking in the same direction for a while. As soon as you get up to walk, it will be reactivated.

Connecting AirPods to an Apple TV is also easy in this context. This is done when the user is near the device with the headphones on, so it will display a pop-up that will allow them to connect quickly, without the need to “rummage” through the settings menu.

In addition to tvOS, iOS 15 will also include more robust Spacial Audio controls and will share more detailed information via volume control. Some of the other new features coming to AirPods this fall are a “Conversation Boost” tool for AirPods Pro that Apple says will help people with “mild” hearing problems and an “Ad Notification” that will read notifications priority.
