Apple employees organize around “real change” in the company

A group of current and former Apple employees is encouraging their colleagues to publicly share stories of discrimination, harassment and retaliation they suffered while working at the company. The call to action came on Monday, when the collective started a Twitter account called Apple Workers.

“For a long time, Apple escaped public scrutiny,” says the group on its website. “When we press for accountability and redress the persistent injustices we have witnessed or experienced in our workplace, we are faced with a pattern of isolation, degradation and full-blown lighting.”

The protesting workers say they have exhausted all internal avenues to improve the company, which is why they will make their grievances public. “We talked to our leadership. We use the Staff team. We climb through Business Conduct. Nothing has changed,” they say. “It’s time to think differently.”

According to The Verge, around 15 people were involved in organizing the initiative. On Aug. 23, they shared the news on a 200-person Discord server for Apple employees and contractors.

The action comes at a time when Apple is facing questions about how to deal with sexism in the workplace. In August, the company placed Ashley Gjøvik, senior manager of the engineering program, on paid administrative leave. In a series of tweets, Gjøvik shared several interactions with the company’s Employee Relations team. One such detail is an episode in which a manager referred to your “tone” in presentations and said, “I didn’t hear you go up an octave at the end of your statements”. Apple is currently investigating Gjøvik’s allegations.

“There’s a lot more information about my history and my concerns about Apple’s working conditions that I haven’t made public yet,” said Gjøvik on a website she created to report on her experience with the company. “I only resorted to it because everything I tried internally failed.”
