We met the new iMac and iPad Pro, as well as the AirTags, but there was more news at yesterday’s Apple event. Apple announced the second generation model of the Apple TV 4K. The new model comes with a more powerful processor, new remote control and intelligent color calibration features.

Apple TV 4K now works with the Apple A12 Bionic processor. This is a customized version created by Apple that first appeared in the iPhone XS and XR series. It is a six-core design with two high-performance and four energy-efficient CPU cores, along with a quad-core GPU.

This allowed Apple TV 4K to be able to play 4K HDR video at 60fps. Users can now stream videos recorded on their iPhone 12 directly to Apple TV 4K via AirPlay. Apple is also working with FOX Sports, NBCUniversal, Paramount +, Red Bull TV and Canal + to support its high quality HDR content, although we are uncertain of its arrival in our market.

The company is also introducing a new Siri remote for the new Apple TV 4K model. The new model features a new design that should be easy to use, even in the dark. The flat touchpad has been replaced by a circular direction pad with physical five-way controls. The surface is touch sensitive and you can also slide over it to navigate the interface.

In addition, users can also run their fingers around the ring to pass the content, as we do on the iPod. The Siri button has been moved to the right. The remote now also has a mute button and an on / off button to directly control your television and be able to use a single remote for your TV and Apple TV.

Apple has also incorporated an intelligent color calibration feature that takes advantage of your iPhone’s sensors. All you need is an iPhone with Face ID with the new iOS version 14.5. The way this works is to start the Color Balance feature and then hold the front of the iPhone within the area marked on the screen. After a few seconds, the process is complete and calibrates your Apple TV.

Apple did not elaborate, but the way this seems to work is similar to the color calibration done with a spectrophotometer. Apple TV 4K sends color patterns to your TV, which are checked by sensors and the camera on the front of the iPhone. He then compares them to the reference image and produces a 3D LUT, which would be sent to the Apple TV 4K. Then, you would simply apply that LUT to all the content you send to the TV, thus ensuring at least some level of color accuracy.

Obviously, this would not be necessary if your TV already had color calibration professionally, but most people do not calibrate their TVs and this simple feature will ensure that they get some precision appearance of industry standard colors, at least content watched via Apple TV 4K.

The new Apple TV 4K costs 199 € / R $ 2399 for the 32GB version and 219 € / R $ 2599 for the 64GB version, and the pre-sale starts on April 30 and will only reach the market in the second half of the year. of May.
