In 2021, Portugal will again be present in those that are one of the six world Olympics in Science, aiming to overcome the results of the previous edition.

Since 2005, around 900 students in primary and secondary education have already had the opportunity to participate in this initiative. For a better consultation on the topic you can consult the official event website.

The team that will represent Portugal in the International Computer Olympics (IOI) is selected through the computer competition called National Computer Olympics (ONI). The scientific component of the test is the responsibility of the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and of the Department of Electronic and Informatics Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Algarve.

At International Computer Olympics – IOI, in turn, are one of the six Science Olympics, aimed at secondary school students from all over the world. This initiative proves to be of great relevance, insofar as it motivates the participation of young people in a complementary activity of great interest and of importance for their future.

The National Informatics Olympics are organized by APDSI – Association for the Promotion and Development of the Information Society and in 2021 they have the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Ciência Viva, Everis Portugal and the Foundation for Science and Technology.

This year, and as has always been the case, ONI takes place in two phases: the first is a competition held over the Internet, in which all secondary school students can compete, and which consists of solving three programming problems of an algorithmic nature , submitting its solutions to an automatic evaluation system.

The 30 competitors who obtain the best classification in this preliminary event will pass to the national final, which will also take place online, on May 8. Due to the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and taking into account the recommendations of the General Directorate of Health and the Government, this year also the National Final and the Selection Test will be held online and not in person.

The best ranked competitors in the final test may be selected to participate in a training internship, to be held in June 2021, at the end of which four elements will be chosen to form the entourage that will represent Portugal in the International Informatics Olympics.

The IOI 2020 is scheduled for Singapore, from 20 to 27 June. As an alternative plan, the possibility of international competition being held online is also considered, similar to what happened in 2020. It should be remembered that Portugal won the 9th bronze medal in the 2020 edition of the International Computer Olympics.

The first edition of the IOI took place in Pravetz, Bulgaria, in 1989, with the support of UNESCO and since then it has been held every year. The main objective of the IOI is to stimulate the interest of young people – secondary school students – in informatics and information technologies and their winners, each year, belong to the group of the world’s best young scientists in the field of Informatics.

Registrations are made in the National Computer Olympics website to subscribe until 11:59 pm on April 29.
