Antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee died at age 75. According to Spanish press publications, El Mundo and El Pais, police found McAfee dead in his prison cell in Barcelona, where he was awaiting extradition to the US.
A spokesman for the Catalonia Department of Justice has already confirmed the death to Reuters. Reports indicate that authorities are inclined to believe that John McAffe may have committed suicide. However, the cause of death has yet to be officially determined.
Spanish authorities arrested McAfee at Barcelona airport in October 2020, following an indictment by US federal prosecutors for allegations of fraud and money laundering. Also hanging over him were tax evasion charges related to his failed bid to run for the White House in the 2020 US presidential election as a Libertarian Party candidate.
Allegedly, McAfee did not file income tax returns for a period of four years between 2014 and 2018, despite earning “considerable income” from a variety of sources, including the money it earned promoting cryptocurrencies and selling the rights to its life story for a documentary.
Although it is best known for the antivirus software that bears its name, in recent years McAfee has mainly attracted media attention because of its erratic behavior.
In 2012, while living in Belize, he was accused of having hired an assassin to kill his neighbor. More recently, Dominican Republic authorities arrested McAfee on suspicion of traveling on a yacht loaded with high-caliber weapons and other military equipment.
“There is a lot of sadness in prison disguised as hostility,” McAfee recently wrote on his Twitter account. “I am old and content with food and a bed, but for the young man prison is a horror – a reflection of the minds of those who conceived them.”
