Another Tiktok Contestant: YouTube Shorts Launches Worldwide

Last year, YouTube announced that it was developing YouTube Shorts, a short-lived video experience for anyone looking to create short, captivating videos using their mobile phones. Since then, they have expanded the beta version to 26 more countries. Today, Google announces YouTube Shorts is going global, making the Beta version available in more than 100 countries, of which Portugal and Brazil are part.

Google announces that it intends to introduce more features as it continues to develop Shorts alongside creators and artists. Here are the main features that we can count on Shorts in our country.

Unlocking a new space for creativity

Creation is at the heart of short video and wants to make creating short videos easier and more fun. Although the short videos can now be viewed on the platform, users from all over the world will be able to access, for the first time, Shorts’ creation tools, which include a multi-segment camera to chain together multiple video clips, the ability to record with music, control speed settings and more.

Users will also have the ability to use audio clips from videos on YouTube – which includes billions of videos across the world – unlocking a new space for creativity. This means you’ll be able to add your own creative touch to the content you like to watch on YouTube and help find you a new audience – whether it’s reacting to your favorite jokes, trying out the creator’s latest recipe or re-enacting comedic sketches. Creators will be in control and will have the option to signal that they don’t want their long video to be remixed.

Shorts already includes fundamental creation tools, such as a multi-segment camera to string together multiple video clips, the ability to record with music, speed control settings and much more. More features are already planned for existing markets and also for new markets, such as:

  • Add text to specific points in your video

  • Audio clips from other Shorts to remix in your own creation

  • Automatically add subtitles to your Short

  • Record up to 60 seconds with the Shorts Camera

  • Add clips from your phone’s gallery to add to your recordings made with the Shorts camera.

  • Add basic filters to color-correct your shorts, with more effects to come later.

Google says it works with the various music partners to ensure that artists and creators have a large library of songs to use in their Shorts. As the beta releases internationally, there will be millions of songs (and more and more) and music catalogs from over 250 music publishers and publishers around the world, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing , Warner Music Group and Warner Chappell Music, Believe, Merlin, Because Music, Beggars, Kobalt and many more.

Providing a seamless YouTube viewing experience

For better viewing and easier discovery of these new features, a line has been added to the YouTube home page, especially for Shorts, launching a new viewing experience that allows you to easily slide vertically from one video to the next, and it was Added a Shorts tab to the mobile to make watching Shorts easier with a single tap.

A way to improve user engagement with the Shorts content, with the creators and artists that matters most, is also being studied by integrating them into the YouTube you already know. For example, if you listen to a snippet of a song on Shorts, you can easily find the entire song, watch the music video or learn more about the artist – all on YouTube. And it works both ways. Tap the create button that appears to the right of a video to make your own Short with that audio or check how other people are using it in Shorts.

Supporting creators on mobile

YouTube has helped an entire generation of creators turn their creativity into business and become the next generation of media companies. Over the past three years, YouTube has paid more than $30 billion to creators, artists and media companies.

Shorts is a new way to watch and create on YouTube, so they’re already looking at what it means to monetize Shorts and reward creators for their content.

As a first step on this journey, the YouTube Shorts Fund was introduced, a $100 million fund distributed throughout 2021-2022, and we will soon have more details on how these amounts will be distributed and in which countries.

For Portugal, the Beta version of Shorts will be available on Wednesday, July 14th, while in Brazil it is already available since July 7th.
